Are you a lover of great food? If so you must be eating out at the best restaurants. However we may often feel out of place if we are not aware of table manners we should follow. Not all of them are complicated. Through this blog we will provide you with some basic table manners you need to follow. If you follow them you will surely create a great impression at your next meal.

  • Sitting Etiquette:  On arriving at the table you must observe your host. You must wait from directions from him or her. There after you must sit. As a host on the other hand you must direct all the guests to be seated. Once they have taken their seats, you must be the last one to sit.
  • Manners about Napkin: Place the napkin next to your plate on the table when you wish to leave. Generally the napkin is to be placed on your lap while having your meal.
  • When to start eating: If you have been served the meal on your plate, you must wait everyone to be served and pick up the cutlery only once the host has guided you to start.

Table manners

  • Make sure others have been offered anything they might want from the table, such as butter, water, salt or pepper. Help yourself last and never stretch across people.
  • Keep your mouth closed and try to avoid making noises of any kind while eating. This may be with the cutlery or with the sound of your chewing or swallowing while eating.
  • Learn to use the appropriate cutlery: You need to know the purpose of each cutlery and use them appropriately. The knife is used for cutting food and is to be held with the right hand an inch or two above your plate. The fork is to be held with the left hand. Once you finish eating the cutlery must be kept back appropriately to indicate whether you have finished or taking a small break while eating. When you have finished, place your knife and fork – with the tines facing upwards – together on your plate.
  • You must try not to speak while you are having the food. In case you must you should try to swallow the food before you start speaking.
  • You must eat in a relaxed manner and keep pace with your companions at the table. In case you finish earlier then you must wait for others to finish their food and also for the host.
  • You must be polite at the table and utilize any opportunity you get to compliment the taste of the food. You must also eat the food with small bites. You should ensure that your mouth is closed while you are chewing the food.
  • At the end of the meal you must wait for everyone to finish including the host. Once you have finished you must wait for directions from your host to leave the table.
