West Bengal Tourism Policy to be revamped
A lot is happening in West Bengal in recent times. We have seen this in terms of development of tourist spots at major tourist destinations of Bengal. Amongst the various developmental activities which have happened we have seen adventure sports being introduced in Digha. Apart from this various initiatives like the introduction of Kerala type houseboats in places like Digha have been taken. The state government also has plans of starting Fish Tourism in Digha. Along with this the state government has initiated steps of starting ropeway services from Digha to Shankarpur and has plans of introduction of toy trains in Digha. All these are clear indications that the state government is indeed keen to boost tourism in Bengal. The latest step taken in this direction is the plan of the state government of a totally revamped tourism policy likely to be unveiled by the end of this month.
The planning for the revamped tourism policy
In this regard the state government is hoping to utilize the upcoming tourism fair – ‘Destination East’—for showcasing its numerous tourist destinations to both domestic as well as the international tour operators, before unveiling the new policy. According to a senior state government official the proposed draft of the West Bengal government’s upcoming tourism policy is ready, and if things go as planned, it will be unveiled by the end of this month. In his opinion in the new tourism policy the relevant points made at the Bengal Business Summit (BGBS) have been incorporated. It was also felt that it is important for the state government to understand the requirements of the domestic and international stake holders so that Bengal can be made a leading tourism and investment destination.
The senior state government official also expressed that following the implementation of the new tourism policy the global tour operators; travel agents and travel writers would have an unprecedented access to innovative and diverse tourism products of West Bengal.
